Building a life on my own terms reconnected me with my true self and taught me important lessons about resilience and the true key to happiness.
It was the start of a transformative period that I fully embraced. Becoming a single mom to my son, Wyatt, certainly had its fair share of challenges, but I viewed it as an opportunity to realign myself with the inherent values, strengths, and passions that have always driven me.
My confidence has been one of my greatest strengths in life. By the time I was in high school, I knew I would be a success because my determination was so fierce. I signed up for ROTC in college. Before starting my training, I was commissioned as a second lieutenant. For eight years I was a part of ROTC and the National Guard.
My experiences in the military taught me leadership skills, team building, and discipline. It also developed a passion for physical fitness. Growing up in the Bronx, although I loved the diversity, culture, and independence I experienced, I never played sports. Fitness was new to me, and I came to love it. I will always treasure the time I served. After finishing my contract with the National Guard in 1991, I became a licensed REALTOR®. My natural drive to excel and passion for serving others has led to a successful career I am proud of.
When I became a single mom, I was ready to embark on the long process of rebuilding our lives because I knew at the end of this journey, every sacrifice and all the hard work would be worth it. Fortunately, I have a great group of friends who are like family to me. They stepped up to help with anything and everything I needed.
It took five years to repair my credit after the divorce. It was one of my friends, a mortgage broker, who gave me great advice. Instead of refinancing my parents' condo, she suggested we sell it. This strategic move allowed me to purchase a multifamily home in 2019, providing both a residence for my son and me and a steady source of income. This advice was a turning point.
In 2022, I purchased what would become my dream home. It needed work, and I completely gutted and remodeled the kitchen. Though it took over six months to finish, during which time I cooked all our meals in the basement and washed dishes in the bathroom, it was worth it. This home has given me space to follow my happiness. I have the freedom to paint the walls whatever color I please—I know not everyone appreciates the cherry red color that lights me up each time I walk into my office! I am proud of what I accomplished on my own and the home I have created.
A lot of my friends have said over the past several years that I have become a different person, but I disagree. I returned to who I have been at my core all along, my true self. I realized sometimes we can lose sight of ourselves in trying to keep up with life and the daily challenges we face. However, if we take the time to listen and create space to let loose our true selves, we may just discover our happiness.
Whenever I am not working, I enjoy doing CrossFit, hot yoga, traveling, and spending time with friends. We celebrate holidays together and are always there for one another through thick and thin. Wyatt was just 5 years old at the start of this journey, and now, he is a sophomore at Xavier High School, actively involved in the sailing team, model Congress, track and field, and honors classes. I’m very proud of him.
Embracing this new chapter allowed me to enhance my role as a mother, friend, and REALTOR®, promoting growth and well-being in every aspect of my life. I hope my story shows that it is never too late to make a change, create the life you want, and pursue what brings you true happiness.
